Video camera not recognized by computer

While I am far from a Pro, I do really like to make good family photography. I own a like-new Sony DCR TRV830 video camera, and until now just was satisfied using strictly tape for viewing. But, I now want to make these tapes into longer lasting DVD's. Well , my H/P computer with Windows Vista operating system does not recognize my camcorder.

I came across your web-site today , and it looks to me like you may be able to advise me. What are your thoughts ? What can I do ? Can you help ? I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Many, many thanks for your important e-mail, you made my day !

It is very nice to experience that in today's world whereby everyone is busy and takes little time to help others for little or no gain, that someone like you is there when asked !

I will do exactly what you suggested, and I will report back to you with my success/failure.

Just went to each web-site you mentioned, and here is what I found :

A. My computer is a one-year-old H/P G60-120us , and does not have firewire slots. ( that in itself is inexcusable for a new computer to be sold this way )

B. I went to the Sony.com web-site , and it seems that Sony, while supporting some older Camcorders with Vista, does not support my TRV830 model.

C, I don't know to add a firewire input to my H/P computer, if it is even possible.

D. I have some 1990's 8mm tapes of my family which I want to put on DVD's, that is what this exercise is all about, I wanted to stream them into my computer and produce DVD's.

E. The following sentence is 'lifted' from your web-site -

Streaming Video
In this second mode of operation, you can stream video from the Sony Handycam to your computer through the USB port. This is handy if you want to use the camcorder as a web cam or if you want to transfer video from the camcorder. Keep in mind that in the USB steaming mode, video quality is worse than what you can acquire through the Firewire DV port. You really should only use the USB streaming capability if your computer doesn't have the Firewire port and you can't afford to upgrade to Firewire .

If I must use my USB port in the fashion mentioned, I will lose video quality, is that quality lost only on the computer screen ? Does the final DVD quality suffer ?
If the final quality suffers, then I don't want to use that method, these videos are very important to me..

The USB quality is far lower than the quality of DV (Firewire) and DVD. So the final DVD quality will suffer. If you are transferring precious video, I highly suggest you either upgraded your computer to support Firewire or you purchase a new laptop/desktop computer that has built-in Firewire ports. To me the cost of upgrade is far lower than losing precious memories.

Many thanks for attending to my problem ;
After many hours of procrastination, I feel the same way, I must up-grade to a suitable compatible Computer.
Take care, and thanks again, I will do as you say.
