When I turn it on it says that "cover is not open" even though the cover is open... I've tried changing tapes, battery, cleaning the lense and and opening and closing the lense cover repeatedly to no avail. Do you know what could be causing the problem and what might be a way to fix it?

Plus it just has the black screen on the lcd screen when it's open or shut, but I can use the play back/edit screen and it will let me view tapes that I have recorded on.

It's probably a mechanical failure. Somehow, the camcorder is not detecting that the lens cover is open. You'll have to send it in for repairs, unless you want to open up the camcorder and try it yourself.

Check out Sony eSupport - DCR-TRV33 - Important Notice About Your Sony Product. Sony will fix it for free.

Yeah, but the problem with the Sony website is that is seems to be broken. Maybe intentionally. Idk.

You know............... I've owned my handycam ccd-trv308 ntsc for about 5 years......... I've use the F*** thing a whole 5 time... yes thats 5 TIMES!!! I remember when I first bought it I had this trouble and when I called the help line I had (probably the only one)nice man help me with it..... he told me that the cause was a mfg flaw in the screen and whenever you flip it ... like to shoot yourself..... it causes the camera to think the lens is locked or shut.......... I remember only bits of how to fix it.... it was that little reset button in the inside of the flipup top to eject the tape.....there was some sort of order to the whole mess and now I cant remember--figures! It's doing it again........... I havent used my camera for 3 years and when I opened it up I get nothing.......... records sound but no image......................... so...the hunt for help began and I ended up here. you guys are great ya know............ but my questions is this..................... WHY CAN'T WE INVOKE THE LEMON LAW WITH SONY FOR ALL THE SHIT THEY KEEP PRODUCING AND REFUSE TO FIX FOR CHEAP........... for gods sake we can buy 2 cameras for what they want for repairs.......... bastards. We should all get together and take them to court........ because it looks like everyone and I mean everyone who bought one of these has had trouble with them!

Oh well......... if that nice man is still out there....please post the reset steps to maybe help us fix it on our own..........
thanks for reading my rant. I will NEVER buy another Sony product as long as I live!

i had the same problem with my sony cam that i rarely use. I found out that they use such of a small piece of ribbon cables to make the connections that the connection to the main Camera unit to the circuit board disconnects,it was barley seated in the ribbon connector when i took it apart. I just pulled the ribbon out and reconnected it and it works fine now....I will never by a SONY Camera ever...poor support on the problem, and they are aware of a defect flaw that happened during manufacturing of the HC20 handy cam model. Yet they never owned up to it or took a course.

I have the same problem, I got this thing in Dec. 8, 2006 as a Xmas present for my wife. We have used it a few times. I took it on a field trip to the zoo and it started this cover isn't open thing. Then the LCD went out. I have been reading lots of people complaining of this. I think there should be a class action suit against SONY for not addressing this problem with customers that buy there products. I have noticed SONY tends to not respect or listen to the consumer.
I baby and take good care of my electronic gear.

Title: DCR HC-20 Black Screen in Record Mode
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: I get a black screen in the record (camera) mode of my DCR HC-20 Sony handycam. The playback works fine but as soon as I go to the camera (record) mode the screen goes black, although the digital information (battery, time, STBY and FN, etc.) still shows on the screen -just no picture.
