When I turn on my camcorder the lens cover does not automatically open. Any suggestions.

Even when the handycam is off, the lens cover can be slid open with your finger, right? It just won't stay open. If that is the case, you can open it with your finger and just tape it open. Try using it, if it works, you can replace the tape with some glue. Be careful that you don't get glue on the lens. There should be no adverse effect on the camcorder.
If you still want to protect the lens while not using it, You can get a separate lens cap that mates the filter thread of the camcorder.
