It sounds like the USB port is built-into the DCR-DVD92, but Sony didn't provide drivers for it . . .
Would it be possible to take the driver from a Handycam that does support USB, such as DCR-DVD403, modify the driver inf file to make it install for the DCR-DVD92. Will that work?

Any luck in finding a driver for it? Is this also something that maybe Sony plans on doing in the future? Seems kinda retarded for them to include a USB port and not provide any drivers for it.

This is for Suzanne C.
If you open the viewfinder, you'll see to the right of the DISP/BATT INFO a gray square sticker. Just remove that sticker and you'll see the port.

Jacob, thanks for your explanation. Is the "hidden" usb port on the DVD92 for input, output or both? Based on your comments, it sounds like it can be used for writing from pc to the DVD92.
John
Wed, 28 Dec 2005 13:33:55 -0800
It is for input and output .. USB port would make the camera communicate with the PC. so you can transfer videos from/to the camera and elso edit in your pc then make the camera write them on a miniDVD. because the DVD92 has a DVD-RW drive built in.

I don't have a grey sticker it's a piece of metal so some of the cameras (maybe the ones sold in Canada?) don't have a USB
newcamera
Sun, 1 Jan 2006 14:40:59 -0800
I have found the usb port everybody is talking about however i don't have the driver for it either; but my camera was bought in canada (nova scotia). The metal thing "new camera" speaks about looks hard and immovable, but use a pin or something to get in between the cracks and it will come right off (its a sticker after all).
It would be simply wonderful if someone found a driver so that i could add some more functions to my decent yet very simple camera.

Hi guys! I'm a newbie at this new DVD camcorder technology. My last videocam was a Hi-8. Anyway, i plan to buy a Sony DVD92 in Future Shop (Canada) clearance price of C$699. If there is no USB or driver on that model, does this mean I cannot edit adding music, titles, etc. to my captured images? Pls. explain 'cuz that's what I'm buying it for...to edit with music. Thanx!

Hi i have looked into this, the 92 does not have the needed software programmed to it. Even with the right drivers it would not work as the 92 does not have a usb mode(unlike other usb enabled sony models) the drivers for sony dvd usb's are all generic and can be used for any model as long as it has the required internal software needed. To see what i mean go into a shop and ask to look at a model that is usb enabled and there is a section in camera menu for usb settings, the 92 does not have this either. so its take it back or manage without a usb. Man this really sux! this is just like when you buy an old vehicle, and while restoring it you find some wires that were taped up by the factory, but have no purpose. Those basterds were just too lazy too change the model for less money. I bet Japan has special usb connectors and software though.

most people are saying there is a usb port under the label next to the dis/battery when the viewfinder is opened.I have just purchased this camcorder and removed the grey sticker. On my UK model the port is a firewire port not usb. When connected to the PC firewire port I have no problem editing using either Pinnacle studio 9 or Videon or Nero 6 or Abobe Premier 2. I wonder why those cannot find a usb port. If you look carefully you can see a big difference between a firwire port and a usb port.Look again and try it.

mine has the usb port, i havnt heard of any other models having a hidden firewire port that would be pretty slick due to tha fact that you can only transfer video from a cam via firewire due to its self powering capabilities. usb will only allow you to copy still images. i know this cuz i work for a major electronics distributor here stateside, and digital imaging is one of my dept.

Not to sure and haven't tried it but is it possible to upgrade the firmware of the camera to the dcr-dvd205's firmware? (or the dvd105, which ever has USB support). Just a wild guess but since the dvd92 does not have some of the features of the more expensive cameras, then theoretically, the camera wouldn't access that part of the frimware because it doesn't have that feature. To clarify...the firmware for the cameras that have the use of the usb port offers more options than the lesser models (our 92) but if our models don't ask for those extra features, can it still utilize parts of the newer firmware without running into issues?

Sat, 17 Jun 2006 10:26:41 -0700
Just called sony and the dvd92 port everyone is talking about is actually a firewire port and will work for downloading to a pc. It is actually a lot faster than usb.
Here is a comparison:
Like USB, IEEE-1394 is a serial bus that uses twisted-pair wiring to move data around.
However, while USB is limited to 12 megabits per second, IEEE-1394 currently handles up to 400 megabits per second.
USB can handle 127 devices per bus, while IEEE-1394 handles 63.
Both USB and IEEE-1394 support the concept of a isochronous device -- a device that needs a certain amount of bandwidth for streaming data. This mode is perfect for streaming audio and video data.
Both USB and IEEE-1394 allow you to plug and unplug devices at any time.

Will using the firewire port require any special software to download to a PC?
AC
Sun, 18 Jun 2006 17:41:00 -0700
no offense Wally, but comparing the port with an actual firewire cable...they don't look the same. And that's in reference to the 4 and 6 wire firewire cables. Unless however there are two different models of the dcr-dvd92. Actually I think there are 3 models. Latest ones with the port completely removed, 1 with firewire, and 1 with the usb connection. I do have a usb cable and it fits perfect into the outlet. Is there a firewire cable with the same fitting as the usb?

I just spent over an hour on the phone with Sony support and they even had me download the USB driver for the DCR-HC20 model. When I did this, it asked for software still once I'd already installed the driver and restarted the computer. I was then transfered to a second line support (higher level support, I suppose) and that person saw the USB port I was talking about. He went to speak to an engineer and came back to tell me that the port is a service port. In other words, there is no way to stream footage via USB from this camera. His only suggestion was a DVD ripper program.

When I bought the DVD92 I was told by the sales rep that you will not be able to edit the video only view it on PC. That is the reason why it is the lowest priced in their model lineup. Checking the specs also shows NO usb
-------------------------------------port:
AUDIO/VIDEO JACKS
Multi AV: Multi AV (Video / S Video / Audio Out)
Remote (Stereo minimini Jack)
DC IN

Only way to edit is try 3rdparty software as recommended by user already.

I have had many sleepless nights with this sony model (92E). I had to use so many programmes to convert the files to be able to edit them. Here's how.
i downloaded DVDZIP. this reconised the vob as the source( the disc in the drive). it can convert to AVI,Mpeg.etc.
I then managed to use editing software to arrange the disc to my liking,
Another way i have come acustom to is this, you could buy a programme from www.ulead.com called ulead videao studio 10 plus, use your mini disc in your cd drive as the source and this will upload to programme ready for editing. you can then export your edited footage to your hard drive in formats for real player. media player. works a treat, one catch though its $99 for boxed version and $89 for download but does offer 30 day free trial. i agree with all your posts. why put a usb/firewire port on somthing then hide it behind a sticker only for the customer to have big trouble using it, all i can think of is that sony had placed it there on simular models and had decided to cover it on the DCR-DVD92E model. that would explain why the drivers were not included. good luck and start having fun with your Smart looking pc's worst friend of a camera.

All in all I like this little dvd92 cam
However, being a private music instructor this device did not help me as much as I would have liked. So,today I strolled down to the local pawnshop and picked up the Vivitar dvr-310 and after that, I picked up a 2gig card at the radio shack and whamo bamo, badda bing.I have video lessons for my students. No muss,no fuss.I still use the over priced under equipped dcr-dvd92 but I am happy that the Vivitar DVr-310 doies the job.Next time,i will think before I buy..........bye

I found the port on my camcorder. I tried to use/connect the USB/cable that comes with our OLYMOUS digital camera D-395 and it fits well. Now my problem is what kind & where can I get the software. Does anybody ahe any idea? And what additional features we can use now. My father-in-law gave this to us before I had my first child. We have so many DVR-RW now but we really cannot do anything to it. It wont play to our DVD players, we can only download the files on our PC but cannot burn it to convert to DVD. I really want to be able to burn the home movies of our daughter & send the copies of DVDs to some relatives. She is 11 months now & her grandparents feels like they missing so much of her. She is the only grandaughter in the family so far & they all leave in US & we are station here in Italy. PLEASE anybody can help me?

Hello,
I've been following along with the saga of the DCR-DVD92. I have a way to convert the video through USB. The product is called Dazzle. It takes in the red/yellow/white audio visual cables that the DCR offers and converts it into USB. It plugs right in. I have not recorded with it yet, but when I started the program, I saw live video feed from my camcorder on my monitor. They have it at Circuit City. I bought the "Platinum" edition and it comes with software. Have fun!

well my friend borrowed my dvd92 and used a ripper he got off google and had the video up and running on windows media player. i believe he used a ripper? but he changed the format of the files too, i had a non sony dvd in the camera and it worked the only thing was it just kept saying "sony disk recommended" but when i finally got a sony disk it doesn't even load up on the comp. im guessing the ripper is best off, but the images may come out very sloppy and laggy, or even cut off parts of the movies, so keep it short. dunno if i helped, i was actually hopping if anyone could help me with saving the disk to the comp. i would like to be able to have the video on my computer and not have to put the disk in all the time, any suggestions?
thanks
try the ripper

I called Sony for everyone to know because i too bought a DCR-DVD92 and I am very mad that it won't connect to my computer. I've tried it on three computers and no go. But i called sont and the guy called me back a day later and he said he talked to the product designer and that guy said that there was one but it was for technical reasons to load all the stuff that you see on the screen. But i know it's possible because my freind has the exact same camera and i did get the movies off through a usb cable, but i just can't remember how. just letting you guys know IT'S POSSIBLE TO GET THINGS OFF THE CAM TO PC THROUGH A USB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These posts are astounding. You can afford your cameras but can't form a correct sentence written in English? No wonder you're all frustrated, you're all idiots. Also you have no right to complain about a bad purchase that you voluntarily made.

Why do u care? Get off of it. God if your so preoccupied with spelling and grammar they why would you type "someonewhocanspelltheenglishlanguage," you do realize there are spaces after words in the freaking English Language? *umbass.Who cares about your reasoning. People get their point across and thats all that matters.

Arrrrrgh. I can't figure out how to get the videos off my camera. I can rip it, of course, but for some reason not all the files are coming off the DVD when I rip it. I got the fucking plastic tab off the camera to expose the USB port, but now my computer won't recognize it.
I'll post if I find out what to do about this fucker.

I couldn't get anything done with the USB port--I'll tinker around with it later, but the most luck I had was copying the .VOB and converting it. iSquint is really helpful...
Mediafork's good too, but I could only get it to copy the first thirty five chapters.

OKAY FELLAS. DCR DVD92 PURCHASED IN CANADA
Let me clear something up.
The USB PORT is hidden. You must flip open the viewfinder lcd screeen. And look to the right of the "DISP BATT INFO" where there is a silver square. It is a metal sticker that can be pryed off with a small knife. Underneath their is a USB connector. The argument is wether or not this service port can stream any footage to a PC. It may be only good for adjusting the camera's internal pc and nothing more. Though that is very doubtful. [email protected]

Here is an article I just found on the web. It may help to serve an answer. As Sony seems not interested. My advice, do not buy Sony ever again. It seems clear that they do not respect their camcorder clients. A hot fix would have saved face. But they are not interested.

In reply to: Sony DCR-DVD92 OWNERS!!! LOOK HERE!!!!!!!! by JosephJAD
Is the jack you describe the one on Page 81 (item 6) of the manual? If so, there is a note that indicates, "Except for DCR-DVD92/DVD602"... what this tells me is that the housing is the same for all the cameras covered by the manual: DCR-DVD92/DVD103/DVD203/DVD403/DVD602/DVD653/DVD703/DVD803... but in the case of the DCR-DVD92/DVD602, that jack is not even connected to anything inside the camera. I don't think any computer driver would make an unconnected camera jack work. That said, this USB port is live on all the other cameras...
Also, refer to page 98: "Connecting to a computer (except for DCR-DVD92/DVD602)"... this adds more to my suspicion that the port you refer to on the DVD92 camera is not enabled. No computer drivers will ever make this work. Maybe some camera brain surgery, but there's no USB smarts in there to begin with... otherwise, it would probably be a DVD103 or a 203 or a 403...
Bummer."
Sucks.

No direct usb ability, but you can buy an AV to USB adaptor. Merely connect the video cables to this adaptor like you would hook it up to a tv and VIOLA! Comes with ulead software and you're ready to edit. Video Capture: GrabBee X+

HOLY SH*T!!! I JUST CONNECTED AN IOMEGA EXTERNAL HDD TO THIS USB PORT AND WAS ABLE TO RECORD FOR 5 HOURS AND COULD HAVE DONE MORE. WHAT A COOL FEATURE. I had it set up on a tripod. This kinda makes it not portable anymore...which is taking the Handy out of the cam...but...f it. Can't believe that I'm the first moron to try this...

The simple solution is a video DVD Recorder I'm a storm spotter and i use it to send video to the TV station the name of it is (DAZZLE DVD Recorder), what's nice about this program is that you can make movies like you see on TV , you use a green screen to videotape the person talking and transpose it to the video then you have the person in front of the picture or the video that you took talking about the video is pretty cool. and it has a lot of other special features , you plug up to it just as if he were plug and up to your VCR , and it works on the DDR-DVD92, and the price is reasonable under $60.00 after taxes . Check your best buy store they carry it there .

FREEDOM79: I have tried that and it`s not working... give us details like what kind of external drive you have used and what kind of cables ?
So... The camera is a guest type USB device, you cannot connect another guest device to it... electrically speaking it`s not working. Please post for us a youtube movie how did you do it if what you say it`s true.
Now for the IDIOTS:
IF you don`t have this camera, please do not post crap or shitty thoughts of yours... like low quality or... cannot use the dvd`s or... no endurance...
I am shooting about 4-5 hours / week - every week since 3 years ago and it works great ! no disk errors, no mechanical errors, even if I have used this camera in extreme conditions and temperatures of -15C ... +40C (I still use some of the DVD-RWs bought 3 years ago with the camera)
I bought 3 stamina battery so I have at least 8 hours energy which gives me enough power for a week - less if I use a lamp attached on the AI connector.
I use the "VR" mode when formatting the DVD-RW to work with (check the MENU -> FORMAT - you dumb ass or go read a user manual)
When I`m done with recording, I use SOFTWARE like Ulead Video Studio 10 or NERO VISION (part of Nero Burning software) or EDIUS Disk Capture or Intervideo DVD, etc.... ANY DVD EDITTING PROGRAM will "know the dvd format"
If you use de "VIDEO" mode for the disk ... remember to fucking close the session on the camera !!! Read the manual you morron... I personally hate this shitty crap heads which don`t know what they are talking about but they believe that they are professionals...
for $500 this was the best camera (3 years ago) in it`s class OF QUALITY (handycam ultra portable) - DVD Quality
I still use it and I love it (even if I have a professional HVR-Z1 now)
There was someone which said that only 15 minutes for a god quality ??? I use 8cm DVD-DL-RW disks which gives me about 45 minutes of high quality... isn`t this the time for a DVCAM ??? an alternate method is to use Double Side Disk.
Now the tough question for stupids: if you drop your tapes in water... can you recover good image from them ???
I dropped my DVDs in water (i was shooting on a lake)... I got my DVDs back, wiped them with a cotton cloth and i was able to download them without problems....
SO back to our sheeps...
Connecting this USB port to my computer (it IS usb - it has the USB sign next to the port) the computer says "Sony USB Device" and starts searching for drivers...
I don`t know what is supposed to be it`s use. here is some info:
USB 2.0 class (means it`s fast)
device ID: USB\VID_054C&PID_01BF\5&F7BE307&0&7
hardware ID: USB\VID_054C&PID_01BF&Rev_0001
Compatible ID: USB\Class_08&SubClass_ff&Prot_01
Capabilities: CM_DEVCAP_REMOVABLE -----> this drawn my attention - this means it`s seen as an external storage device (USB external DVD ?)
Now if any programmer around can use this information, will be great!
I don`t need to download through USB since I am working with the disks externally ...
BUT IT WOULD BE GREAT TO USE IT WITH AN EXTERNAL HDD DRIVE !!!! like FREEDOM79 claims to succeeded

I too am stuck with this rediculus camcorder!!!!
I have tried lots of ripping/converting/editing streaming software's which no luck yet.
After reading through everyone's posts I found the USB port last night which in my opinion is a waste of time.
I do have a connecter called EasyCap (google it) which has 3 Aux ends and a USB end which i am working with now, i can stream though but the audio isn't coming through as the software i have with it (Ulead VS 8 SE) doesnt like vista so hopefully if i get an update verson of this software i can work with it.
Will be in touch

Finalize the disc, pop it in your drive, Ulead VideoStudio 11
As we speak my footage is being uploaded to Youtube... happy days.

Hi guys. The USB port under that grey cover will NOT work for normal use, and there are NO drivers that will allow you to access the disc data. The USB port is purely for accessing the camera programming when servicing the camera. I know this for a fact because I have repaired this model before, and this is why the USB port is hidden behind a secret cover. The only way to get the footage off onto PC is to finalise the disc, then put it into your PC DVD drive.
