Which driver? USB? Firewire? The USB driver for Sony camcorders is USBDRVEN.EXE.

Well, The pc knows there is hardware hooked up. It will not let it pull up though, and when I tried to download USBDRVEN.EXE. It said it was not able to download correctly on the windowa system (vista) I don't know what the problem is, or how to go about fixing it.

I don't understand what you are saying. Are you talking about Firewire or Firewall? They are completely different things and are significant to your request. And why do you need one or the other? Please explain your problem clearly. If you need some help explaining your problem, please read this document: How To Ask Questions The Smart Way.

Chieh,
I have the same problem, I downloaded the USB driver you listed and it made no difference. The problem is that Vista does not recognise the DV camera???? MS does not show a driver for Sony DV camera and Sony does not show a driver for Vista OS. Where to now??? I don't know!!

Robert,
Are you using the Firewire port or the USB port? Your message is unclear, because when you refer to DV camera, you are talking about the Firewire port. But you said you downloaded the USB driver. Please be specific. Are you using an USB cable or a Firewire cable?
Please take a look at the following articles to familiarize yourself with the difference between Firewire vs. USB: Connecting Your Digital Camcorder to Your Computer

Chieh,
I am using USB but others are having the same problem using IEEE 1394 connection.
Sony ASIA site does not have a driver listed for Vista OS.
My vista OS detects that the USB port is in use but does not recognise it is a DV (digital video) camera trying to access it. Vista then tries to find a driver without success and then crashes.
Do you know a way of making vista and the camera recognise each other?
Thanks Robert

Just to be clear, USB and Firewire are completely different beasts. Therefore, although the problems with the two appears similar, they are completely different problems. Now, to further clarify, DV (high quality) is only available though the Firewire port. You can get streaming video through the USB port, but it is not DV quality.
Now that we got the technical understanding out of the way, I started playing with my Sony Handycam's USB port with Windows Vista today. The most likely reason why you can stream video through the USB port is because you did not turn on "USB Streaming". This function is likely under the "USB-Camera" setting in the Handycam menu.
I'm working on a document now to explain how to install the driver in step-by-step manner. The document is located here: "Connecting Sony Handycam to Windows Vista Via USB". Right now it only has a series of screen shots. But maybe it's enough for you to follow along.

Hey, I've read through your discussion. I connect my USB to the PC, and it installs the driver. However, when I go to window explorer, none of the files saved to the disk show up? Everything is blank. Going back to the camera (disconnecting the USB), the videos are there. Additionally, I don't have the two items you discuss in the device manager. Model: DCR-DVD100 NTSC

Are you trying to access the Memory Stick? Did you turn it on and switch to "Memory" mode, while it is connected to your computer?

The model I have doesn't have a memory stick. It's a DVD (mini) recorder. I did put it in "memory" mode (actually its play mode). I even take the DVD out of the recorder and put it in my DVD drive on the PC and it does not recognize any files. I hate Sony.

You might have to "finalize" the disc: edit mini DVD in your computer

Finalizing the disc worked. Came over as a VOD file. Thanks.

oK; it came as VOD file; how can I edit this file on Windows Movie Maker?; the ImageMixer supplied by Sony is not compatible with Windows Vista and the Windows Movie Maker does not recognize the VOD extension
