i have footage from a concert at my house and i want to get the sound off of the video footage

VirtualDub can extract the sound file from your video. It's a free video processing software. After installing it, load up your video, pull-down the "File" menu, and select "Save WAV...".

windows Moviemaker can do it too.
Put the video in the Audio track in Timeline (click that long bar that says "show time line View") and Save video, NOT PROJECT.
WMK will make it a WMA file just like most music on your comp.
