video streaming over the Internet

Yesterday, some friends and I got together. In the fun of our discussion, we thought it would be really cool to stream live video over the Internet . . . say during a wedding or a bar-be-que, etc . . . so that our remote friends can join us over the web.

We were able to find QuickTime Broadcaster and QuickTime Streaming Server free to download on Apple's web-site. They seem to do exactly what we needed . . .

But before we pick a broadcasting platform . . . does anyone know any similar video streaming software for Linux or Windows? Thanks.

No. I don't have a Mac. When we were talking about it, we were thinking of trying it with your PowerBook.

I want to stream some real-life videos of my baby from one room to another in my house today. So I started thinking about this streaming software. I think I found just what I need: Unreal Media Server suite of software. It's a set of freeware software for streaming pre-recorded video and live video. Software include Unreal Media Server, Streaming Media Player, Unreal Live Server, Screen Capture DirectShow source filter, Generic DirectShow source filter for network IP video cameras, DirectShow source filter for Axis network video cameras, and Web application for remote TV channel control.

I will be trying out this suite of software tonight. Will post again afterward. You can find the link to these software in the "Related Links" section below.

Title: Playing Back DVSD Video Files on Windows
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: Recently, I recorded some night vision videos of my backyard, trying to capture a possum. The video signal is captured through a bullet cam connected to a camcorder. The camcorder is, in turn, connected to the computer via Firewire. Unreal Live Server, on the computer, captures the video in Windows . . .
