Streaming questions

I am a trucker and want to set up a dash cam that feeds to my computer and records 24/7 and or since I have wi fi in the truck at all times, send a live stream over the internet so my friends and family can see where I'm at and what i'm doing.

Is there anyway to do it so it's not all choppy like chat roulette? with a higher quality camera or something?

How would I go about streaming it to the internet, would I have to get a website or something?

Thanks Everybody, i think if i can figure this out and showe other truckers it would revolutionize shit since most of us are not computer savy, and this would make keeping close with family alot easier. I will pass on the knowledge if you guys help me out.

If you use Windows, I suggest you look into Unreal Media Server. With it, you can set-up a streaming server on your computer. You won't need a dedicated web server. Then your friends and relatives can use the Streaming Media Player to connect to your server and watch you.

Of course, whether the video is choppy or not depends on your Internet connection. What's the speed of your Internet in your truck?

Cool thanks! Yes i use windows. The speed is not great wi fi, but downloads at about 100 kb/s or more sometimes. Would an HD webcam help and the people viewing can just let the video buffer, or are these different issues?

Also what kind of memory would it take to record and store 12/24 hours of recorded video on my laptop, before it loops and starts to record over. This would be what i would do if i can't have a smooth stream over the internet.

Since you are going to be serving the video, it's the upload speed that is important in this project. Check the speed that your ISP is providing to you.

The HD webcam is a separate issue. However, at the HD resolution, it will saturate your bandwidth. For streaming video, you are likely looking at 160x120 or 320x240 resolution max, depending on your Internet connection.

The easiest way to figure out how much storage space you need is to record a segment of video at the resolution you want to serve and look at the video file size.
