DCR-DVD300 Handycam problems with Windows 7

I have a very old Sony Handycam DCR-DVD300, the kind that has little DVD-RW's inside it, that it burns directly to.

It connects to my PC with a mini-usb to regular-USB cable.

The problem is that Windows 7 recognizes it as an optical drive, rather than a camcorder.

Sony no longer offers ANY drivers for this camera on their site, and all the ones I find do not recognize the camera. It just continues to show up as an optical drive.

Any suggestions? SONY says that the drivers should be included with Windows 7, but alas, they arent.

Thanks

Well, Sony is technically correct, because Windows 7 did find the optical driver for it. But I'm guess you want to stream video to your computer, rather than downloading the video off the mini-DVD.

First, check to see if the "USB Steaming" capability is turned on. On many Sony Handycams, the functionality is turned off by default. You should be able to turn it on by navigating through its menus.

Once you have the "USB Streaming" function turned on, try connecting it to your Windows 7 computer again. See if Sony is actually right about Windows 7 having a built-in driver for it.

If not, then you can try the steps in this article: Connecting Sony Handycam to Windows Vista Via USB. Windows 7 is basically a newer version of Windows Vista. I suspect you can install the USB driver in the same manner.
