Does your ISP use a standard FTP port? If not, you might need to find out how to enter the special port into Fwink. What is the host and port you specified in your FTP program?

Good day Sir,

Your software is really user friendly. I've gotten everything set up and have the web page working however the "image" that is uploaded is black. I see the image fine in Fwink but the image that uploads to the server is just black. Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Try saving the image to a local file and see if it is black. I suspect you've uploaded the image to a different FTP location than you expect. You are probably looking at an old black image. Because JPG is a specialized format, it's not possible to load a corrupt image file and see black. You'd see a broken image instead. So if the local file is not black, then you are uploading to a different FTP location. If the local image is black, then you have to work out Fwink settings.

Hello! Your instructions are great, I noticed that you had problem with low light enviroment - you could use IR (infrared) diode to light it up - camera see this light, people don't.

Regards, Kuba;)

That's a great idea, Kuba. I thought about the same. But I was using the remote web cam with my baby. I wasn't sure what the effect of IR to my baby's eyes. I think it would be like shining a flashlight into someone's eyes, even though they can't see it, it didn't feel safe. So decided to forgo the IR. But I'm sure it will work great in other cases.

Are you serious? You are worried about what effect infrared light has on a baby? ***The sun emits enormous amounts of infrared light*** It's always there, you just can't see it, genius.

The camera isn't emitting the infrared light, just detecting it. Jeez.

Actually, you failed to understand the article fully. My Sony DCR-TRV350 Handycam (mentioned in the article) does emit infrared light to film in total darkness.

And the sun emits a lot of different types of radiation. It's ok to be bathed in it for a reasonable amount of time. But you wouldn't want to stand under it for a very long time (sun burns), nor should you stare into it.

Much like you shouldn't stare into a regular LED (try staring into one if you don't believe me; your eyes gets uncomfortable quick), you probably shouldn't stare into a regular infrared LED. The radiation strength of the infrared LED is likely the same as the regular LED, but your eyes wouldn't feel uncomfortable staring at a infrared LED (yah, I tried it before). But it could possible induce the same amount of damage as a regular LED.

The two LED on my Sony DCR-TRV350 can't be seen. But it does glow slightly in the dark. In total darkness, it will certainly attract a baby's eyes. I don't want my baby to stare into those LED's until I see scientific proof that the infrared LED's are harmless.

Sounds like you are a couple of uptight, paranoid new parents.
Chill out......A mother should be up and about in a few days,
unless she had complications. Your wife sounds like a baby
herself, needing you...and the web cam, as her baby sitter.
Sounds ridiculous. Or....are you not trusting your wife???
Good luck. I feel sorry for the teachers when your child
starts school. Relax, your wife and your baby ain't gonna break!

How about you tell that to parents that just had their first child die due to SIDS.

Your method seems working but to be honest I don't like it very much, since I don't use FTP.. I tried to make my build of Fwink and add an option to allow it execute a command each time it completes capturing a picture, and I wrote a bat script to archive the file. Seems it's working perfectly. If any one is interested in it, I can share my build.

Sure. I'm interested in your build. Would you post it here?

Hey Chieh,

Sure. I am posting my build here. There is a readme in the package and you can have a try. I am still trying to do some other improvements. I found fwink always captures at 320x240. If you choose 640x480 in the settings, it just resize the small 320x240 image to 640x480 after capture, so the image is not sharp. Even if I am using a Logitech C910 which supports HD video, I can only get 320x240 in the capture source. Hope I can fix this in a few weeks.

Title: Remote Web Cam on a Canoe
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: Is it possible to have a setup where, say, you have a camera (water proof?) on a canoe that is transmitting images to a land based computer, plus the person on the canoe can speak to the person in front of the computer? Thanks

Title: source code of the Fwink
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: Your web article "Setting Up a Remote Web Cam" is quite interesting and helpful. I cannot find the source code of the Fwink from your links. Could you help me to get it? Is it possible that many people watch the pictures from their homes simultaneously by the same server?
